INVESTING IN FREEDOM AND SAFETY - why invest in Carawater systems?
Besides the additional advantages of Carawater systems the answer lies within two critical questions.
1. Water Quality – How Safe Is Your Water?
Whether from the tap or a natural source, the water you rely on may contain invisible threats. Below is a list of common contaminants, how they affect your health, how to remove them (Filter micron Rating must be an absolute rating not nominal to be effective), and what happens when they’re stored in a water tank.
Note: Protozoan parasites (cyst) like Giardia for example can survive for weeks within a tank environment in cyst form and multiplication only occurs once ingested inside a host body.
Biological Contaminants (Pathogens)
Contaminant | Type | Effects on Humans | Filtration or Treatment | Behaviour When Stored Tanks |
E. coli | Bacteria | Severe diarrhea, vomiting, kidney damage (in some strains) | 0.2-micron to 0.5-micron filter UV-C disinfection Chlorination | Can survive and multiply if biofilm forms |
Salmonella | Bacteria | Typhoid fever, food poisoning, gastroenteritis | 0.2-micron to 0.5-micron filter UV-C disinfection Chlorination | Can survive in stagnant or warm tanks |
Campylobacter | Bacteria | Diarrhea, cramps, fever, nausea | 0.2-micron to 0.5-micron filter UV-C Chlorination | Survives days to weeks in water |
Legionella | Bacteria | Legionnaires’ disease (severe pneumonia) | 0.2-micron filter Heat disinfection chlorination | Multiplies in warm, stagnant tanks and plumbing |
Giardia | Protozoan parasite (cyst) | Diarrhea, cramping, dehydration | 1-micron filter UV-C disinfection | Does not multiply, survives in cyst form for weeks |
Cryptosporidium | Protozoan parasite (cyst) | Watery diarrhea, dehydration, especially dangerous for immunocompromised | 1-micron filter UV-C (high dose) disinfection | Very resistant; survives chlorine, persists in tanks |
Norovirus | Virus | Vomiting, diarrhea, fever | UV-C (adequate dose) 0.001-micron Nanofiltration Chlorination | Does not multiply but remains infectious in tanks |
Rotavirus | Virus | Severe diarrhea in children | UV-C (adequate dose) 0.001-micron Nanofiltration Chlorination | Remains viable in water for weeks |
Hepatitis A | Virus | Liver inflammation, nausea, fatigue | UV-C Chlorination 0.02-micron ultrafiltration | Can remain active in stored water |
Chemical & Dissolved Contaminants
Contaminant | Type | Effects on Humans | Filtration or Treatment | Behaviour in Stored Tanks |
Lead | Heavy metal | Brain damage, developmental delays in children | Activated carbon + Reverse Osmosis | Does not degrade; accumulates if present |
Arsenic | Metalloid | Cancer, skin lesions, circulatory issues | Reverse Osmosis, activated alumina | Remains stable; does not decay in tanks |
Nitrates/Nitrites | Fertilizer runoff | Blue baby syndrome, oxygen deprivation | Ion exchange, Reverse Osmosis | Stable; accumulates in tanks |
Chlorine | Disinfectant | Taste/odour, eye and skin irritation | Activated carbon | May dissipate over time |
Chloramine | Disinfectant | Long-term exposure risks; kidney stress | Catalytic carbon | More stable than chlorine; remains in tanks |
Fluoride | Additive | Dental/musculoskeletal issues in excess | Activated alumina, Reverse Osmosis | Stable in storage |
Pesticides/Herbicides | Agricultural runoff | Hormone disruption, cancer risk | Activated carbon, Reverse Osmosis | Can persist for weeks in tanks |
PFAS (Forever Chemicals) | Industrial chemicals | Hormone disruption, immune suppression, cancer | Activated carbon (specialized), Reverse Osmosis | Do not degrade, remain indefinitely |
.
Other Contaminants
Contaminant | Type | Effects on Humans | Filtration or Treatment | Behaviour in Stored Tanks |
Sediment & Rust (Iron) | Physical particles | Low levels – generally not harmful. High concentrations – stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting | 1-micron to 20-micron sediment filters | Settles to bottom if undisturbed |
Algae | Microorganism | Taste/odour issues, potential toxins | UV-C, activated carbon | Can bloom in light-exposed tanks |
Nano & Micro Plastics | Synthetic particles | Unknown long-term effects; potential toxin carriers | 0.02-micron filters, Reverse Osmosis | Remain suspended or settle slowly |
Organic Matter (Tannins) | Natural compounds | Discoloration, musty taste | Activated carbon | Stable in tanks; can support bacterial growth |
Iron & Manganese | Metals | Metallic taste, stains, pipe scaling | Sediment + oxidation + carbon or Reverse Osmosis | Can precipitate and form sludge |
The contaminants listed above represent a broad sample of the biological, chemical, and physical threats that can be present in both city water and natural source water. While not exhaustive, this list highlights the diverse range of potential health risks, from bacteria and viruses to heavy metals, pesticides, forever chemicals and plastics.
Critically, once water enters a storage tank whether on a caravan, boat, or off-grid system it is subject to changes that can affect its safety including:
- Stagnation, heat, and light exposure may allow microbial regrowth.
- Biofilm and sediment buildup can shield pathogens from disinfection.
- Chemical contaminants do not degrade and may accumulate over time.
This underscores the importance of a two-stage filtration approach within tank preservation an additional safety measure:
- Pre-filtration before water enters the tank to block or neutralise harmful contaminants from city or natural sources.
- Post-tank (point-of-use) filtration to ensure safe, clean drinking water at the tap by removing or disabling any contaminants that may have persisted or formed in storage.
Only by filtering both before and after the tank can you confidently protect yourself from the full range of waterborne risks whist maintaining tank health.

2. Investment – The Value of Quality?
When comparing Carawater water filtration systems against alternatives, please consider the following to ensure you have the most important information to hand.
- Filter Ratings: Absolute Ratings means the filter is designed to remove ≥99.9% of all particles at the rated micron size or larger. Nominal Rated Filters will remove approximately a certain percentage (typically 60% to 95%) of particles at or above the stated micron size.
- Filter Cost: While the initial cost might appear higher, the extended life (capacity) of Carawater systems and their advanced features ensure long-term value. We suggest basing comparisons on 100 litres of processed water per replacement filter, we suggest using the replacement filter costs as this represents the long-term ongoing cost.
- Product Names: Be aware of products using levels of filtration in their names, check the filter micron rating and whether it is an Absolute or Nominal rating to be sure of what the actual efficiency.
- UV-C performance: 99.999% effectiveness is based on three main criteria.
- First the clarity of incoming water, every impurity creates a shadow of untreated water. Without turbulence inside the reactor as is created inside the Carawater reactors with a patented process these blind spots allow for sections of water to remain untreated.
- Second is the UV-C wave length 265nm is the wavelength at which 99.999% is achieved as in the Carawater LED UV-C reactors. Anything other is an immediate reduction in effectiveness.
- Third is the UV-C Dose, this is shown in unit of measurement (mJ/cm²). Drinking water systems typically aim for a minimum UV dose of 40 mJ/cm² to ensure a high level of disinfection of 99.999% including virus level inactivation.
- Certification & Standards Compliance: Carawater components are manufactured to stringent engineering standards and are independently third party tested for compliance and performance versus in-house or generic standards that usually claim to be “Tested to” a specific standard.

The Plastic Problem: Reducing Environmental Impact
Over the last few decades, plastic water bottles have significantly contributed to environmental pollution, becoming a leading source of plastic waste. While they offer convenient access to clean water, discarded bottles take 450 years to decompose, releasing harmful nano and microplastics (NMPs) into ecosystems. These plastics contaminate food and water sources, with the average person consuming thousands of plastic particles annually. Switching to chemical-free water filtration systems like Carawater’s reduces reliance on bottled water, helping to combat this global issue.
